May at Sophia Montessori

The Beauty of Everyday Growth and A Fond Farewell

May brought a gentle rhythm of celebration, reflection, and joyful work to our classrooms. As the school year begins drawing to a close, the children continue to grow in independence, concentration, friendship, and wonder—while savoring the simple joys that make Montessori life so meaningful. This will be our last newsletter as Sophia Montessori closes its doors next month.

🌸 Celebrating the People We Love

This month, the children joyfully prepared for Mother’s Day through thoughtful, hands-on work. They:

  • Created handmade gifts and cards

  • Decorated special bags to bring gifts home

  • Reflected on the people they love most

These moments offered opportunities for the children to express gratitude and love in tangible ways.

One especially beautiful Show & Tell moment came when Eliana shared paintings representing different members of her family, explaining why each one was meaningful to her.

🦋 Wonder & Discovery in Nature

Spring brought many opportunities for exploration and curiosity.

The children:

  • Studied the life cycle of a butterfly

  • Observed live caterpillars transforming in the classroom

  • Learned about the parts of leaves and different plant types

  • Explored preserved insects during Show & Tell

  • Continued flower arranging with irises, tulips, sunflowers, and more

Nature study remains one of the most powerful ways children encounter awe, patience, and observation.

And, of course, the questions were unforgettable:

Student: “How long have you had the caterpillars?”

Ms. Julianna: “I got them two days ago!”

Student: “From Starbucks?”

🧠 Deepening Academic Work

As the year progressed, the children demonstrated remarkable growth in concentration and confidence.

Lessons throughout May included:

  • Addition practice and math fact games

  • Forming four-digit numbers with golden beads

  • Sentence building and sight word recognition

  • Learning the five oceans

  • Puzzle tracing and sensorial exploration

  • Embroidery, bead stringing, and texture matching

Our older students especially showed increasing independence and focus as they engaged with more advanced Montessori materials.

🤲 Caring for the Environment & One Another

A beautiful theme throughout May was the children’s growing desire to care for their environment.

The classroom was filled with purposeful work like:

  • Scrubbing tables

  • Watering plants

  • Folding laundry

  • Sharpening pencils

  • Maintaining classroom order

These small acts of responsibility help children develop:

  • Independence

  • Respect for shared spaces

  • Confidence in contributing meaningfully to community life

As Dr. Maria Montessori beautifully reminds us:

“Play is the work of the child.”

And meaningful work fills the children with joy.

🎶 Preparing for the End-of-Year Celebration

Throughout the month, the children practiced songs and poems for the upcoming end-of-year celebration and final Mass together.

There has been a sweetness and tenderness to these preparations as the children eagerly rehearse, sing together, and anticipate sharing their work with their families.

☀️ Outdoor Joy & Seasonal Changes

May also brought:

  • Extra recess time in beautiful weather

  • Rainy-day indoor play adventures

  • Snow surprises (!)

  • Outdoor exploration and movement

Whether enjoying sunshine or wondering at spring snowstorms, the children remained deeply engaged with the changing world around them.

🌱 Montessori in Action

This month beautifully reflected several core Montessori principles:

Independence

Children choosing, completing, and caring for their own work.

Hands-On Learning

Learning through movement, touch, observation, and experience.

Respect for the Child

Allowing children time to wonder, ask questions, and develop naturally.

Community

Working together peacefully while caring for one another and the classroom environment.

💛 A Final Reflection

As we approach the final weeks of the school year, May has reminded us how much growth can happen through ordinary moments:

  • peeling eggs,

  • arranging flowers,

  • singing together,

  • caring for a plant,

  • asking thoughtful questions,

  • or helping a friend.

These quiet experiences form the heart of Montessori education.

🌿 Looking Ahead

We are looking forward to celebrating together at our final school Mass and picnic in June. Thank you to our families, grandparents, alumni families, and supporters for walking alongside us on this journey.

With gratitude,
The Sophia Montessori Academy Team
